Pro Golf Tips - Stance
Can
I have too wide a stance?
Yes, you can and it can affect the way you swing. If your stance is
wider than shoulder width, you may find that your ability to make a
full shoulder turn is restricted. Golfers with too wide a stance tend
to stand with their legs locked in place. This does not encourage a
free swinging motion.
Can
the ball’s position affect my posture?
Yes, it can and it can also have a direct influence on your swing. If
the ball is too far away from you, you will reach out for it which
means
you could end up standing with your shoulders well out in front of
your
hips. Your balance will be affected as will your swing. The same
applies
if the ball is too close to you. You posture will be more upright and
your swing will be affected.
Do
I change the position of the ball to play off uneven lies?
If your right foot is above your left, move the ball back to the
middle
of your stance. If your right foot is below your left, move the ball
forward so it is in line with the instep of your left foot. If the
ball
is above or below your feet, position it in the middle of your stance.
Do
I change my stance to play off uneven lies?
If the ball is below your feet, widen your stance. On uphill and
downhill
lies, move your right foot closer to your left without losing your
balance.
Do
I change my stance when I am playing in a strong wind?
You can widen your stance if your balance is being affected by the
wind.
When you putt, turn your toes and knees in towards each other to keep
your lower body stable.
Can
a faulty ball position make me pull or push the ball?
It can be the cause. If you consistently pulled the ball to the left,
the ball may be too far forward in your stance. The reverse is true.
Your grip and your aim and alignment may need checking as well.
Do
I move the ball back in my stance to hit it lower?
To hit the ball lower, play the shot with the ball in its standard
position.
Take two more clubs (a 4 iron rather that a 6) than what you would
normally
play the shot with and swing slower. You will hit the ball lower
because
of the reduced loft of the club. There will be less spin on the ball
so it will not be affected by the wind as much.
